Ask an Expert: Deepna Kumar on Auditions, Scams and Staying Power

Deepna Kumar began at Yash Raj Films and has since cast for films, web series, television and advertisements. Today she is a casting director, talent manager, and acting and communication coach. We asked her ten questions artists ask us most, and her answers are honest, practical and kind.

"Sometimes, someone who is honest in their performance stays with you much longer than someone who is simply trying too hard to impress."

1. What drew you to casting, and how did you get from Yash Raj Films to where you are today?

My journey started with Yash Raj Films, and over the years, casting became much more than just a profession for me. I have always found it interesting to understand people, their personalities and what makes them right for a particular character. Working across films, web series, television and advertisements has taught me a lot about this industry. Today, along with casting and talent management, I also coach aspiring actors, which is something I genuinely enjoy because I get to be part of their growth.

2. What do you notice in the first 30 seconds of an audition, and what makes an actor memorable?

I usually look at how natural and comfortable an actor is in front of the camera. Their eyes, expressions, body language and the way they listen tell me a lot. You don't necessarily have to be a very experienced actor to make an impression. Sometimes, someone who is honest in their performance and truly understands the character stays with you much longer than someone who is simply trying too hard to impress.

3. What are the most common mistakes in audition tapes and self-submissions?

One common mistake is not reading the brief properly. Sometimes actors send the wrong format, ignore instructions or put more effort into looking good than understanding the scene. Poor lighting, unclear sound and unnecessary introductions can also take away from an otherwise good performance. My advice is simple: understand what is being asked, keep your setup clean and focus on performing naturally. You don't need to overdo it; you need to make the character believable.

4. What should a portfolio or showreel contain for a casting director to take it seriously?

Keep it simple and honest. Your photographs should look like you, not like a heavily edited version of you that we might not recognise when you walk into an audition. Your showreel should have a few strong scenes that show your acting ability and range. Include basic details such as your height, age range, languages and location. You don't need to show everything you've ever done. Just give the casting director a clear idea of who you are and what you can bring to a role.

5. How can a new artist spot a fake casting call or a scam?

Please remember that you should never have to pay someone to guarantee you a role. If someone promises you a part in exchange for money, be very careful. Always verify the casting director, production house and project before sharing your details or agreeing to anything. Don't let desperation or the excitement of a big opportunity cloud your judgement. I understand how much actors want that one breakthrough, but your safety and self-respect should always come first.

6. What does a talent manager actually do, and when should an artist look for one?

A talent manager helps you understand where you want to go with your career and how to work towards it. It's not just about getting auditions; it's also about building the right profile, identifying suitable opportunities, making professional connections and taking the right decisions. You don't necessarily need a manager from day one. First, understand your craft and your goals. When you reach a stage where you need direction, planning and someone to help you navigate opportunities, a good talent manager can be valuable.

7. How can an artist from a small town, without industry connections, get noticed?

I don't think coming from a small town should stop anyone from pursuing acting today. Digital platforms have made it easier to reach casting professionals, even if you don't live in Mumbai. What matters is how seriously you prepare yourself. Work on your acting, make good self-tapes, keep your profile updated and apply for roles that suit you. Don't spend all your energy worrying about who you know. Focus on becoming someone who is ready when the right opportunity comes.

8. How should an artist handle rejection after an audition?

I always feel that actors need to understand one important thing: not getting a role doesn't mean you are not a good actor. Casting depends on so many factors, and many of them have nothing to do with your talent. Through my coaching, I encourage people to work on their skills while also learning to handle their emotions and expectations. You can be disappointed; that's completely normal. But don't let one rejection decide how you feel about yourself or whether you should continue pursuing your dream.

9. If an artist could do one thing this week to move ahead, what should it be?

Take an honest look at your current profile. Are your photographs recent? Does your showreel represent your best work? Is your introduction clear? If everything is in place, start submitting for suitable roles instead of waiting for someone to discover you. And if something needs improvement, work on that first. You don't have to change your entire career in a week. Just take one meaningful step that brings you closer to where you want to be.

10. What is your message for the artists on Stars N Celebs?

Please don't give up on yourself just because things are taking longer than you expected. This industry requires patience, consistency and a lot of self-belief. Keep learning, keep improving and be professional in the way you work with people. At the same time, remember that you are more than your career or the number of opportunities you get. Take care of yourself, respect your journey and keep moving forward. There is no single timeline for success.
